The city was named for General John Custer who fought in the Mexican-American War and died at the Battle of Buena Vista on November 30, 1847. Cornelius is a small town in Oregon, located in the Klamath Mountains. The population was 522 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Josephine County judicial district and is bordered by Soda Springs to the north and east, Ashland to the south, and Lassen National Forest to the west. The community was founded on December 15, 1868, when Methodists from nearby Iuka organized a group of settlers to find new land for themselves in what is now Josephine County. The first settler was Cornelius Witherspoon. Witherspoon built a cabin on a ridge overlooking his original homestead near what is now town center. The first store opened in 1870, and J.M. Dunn started selling goods from his farm shortly thereafter. By 1880, two churches had been built: First Methodist and then Baptist (later Pentecostal). In 1882, Cornelius became one of three towns in Josephine County when it was created from parts of Butte and Klamath Counties. The other two towns were Butte and Dido (now Santiam). At that time, Josephine County contained an area of 111 square miles; Cornelius included just 10 square miles. In 1886–87, Cornelius experienced its first tornado when winds gusts reached up to 100 mph (160 km/h). A few years later, a fire destroyed much of the town center but no lives were lost as a result of it; however four businesses were damaged or destroyed as well as many homes including those owned by J M Dunn Sr., Mrs Ella Jameson & their children John P & Magdalene P Dunn all burned down within hours after striking without warning! In 1893–94 there was another tornado which caused damage throughout most of downtown with only some minor injuries reported however 3 stores remained standing with significant loss elsewhere including 1 bank building which went up in flames also damaging several homes along with 2 cotton ginners mills total loss $2mn ($102mn today) while over 60 people lose their lives due to natural disasters during this time period! Cornelius was founded in 1847 by Cornelius A. Hance and his brother, Samuel Hance. The town grew quickly, and by 1861 it had a population of 2,000 people. By 1870, the town had outgrown its small square, and so a new courthouse was built on Main Street. In 1873, Cornelius became the first city in Oregon to be incorporated. In 1902, Cornelius was hit by an arsonist's fire that destroyed most of the downtown business district. The community rebuilt quickly and continued to grow until World War II when the war caused a decline in economic activity. With no industry left to support the town, Cornelius slowly turned into a sleepy little village until it finally fell apart in the late 1990s. Today, there is only one remaining house in downtown Cornelius and all of the other buildings have been replaced with apartments or condos.
