Maga coffee beans were first grown in Cornelius, Oregon. The bean was named after General José Francisco Maga, who is credited with helping to start the Spanish-American War. He was a U.S. Army general and fought in the war in Cuba and Puerto Rico. After the war, he moved to Portland and started a coffee plantation near the Willamette River. In 1888, his son Carlos founded the company that would grow maga coffee for most of its history. The first maga coffee beans were roasted in 1889 by Carlos Maga and his son Manuel at their plantation on Canoe Creek outside of Cornelius. The beans were hand-selected from a variety that had been growing for several years in central Chileardsco Province near Santiago de Chile. From this variety, they began to roast three different grades of magas: Guatemala grade (the lightest), Peru grade (the thickest), and Ecuadorian grade (the strongest). At first, these grades only came into production during harvest time; however, later on they also became available throughout the year as needed. Cornelius was founded in 1824 by Swedish farmers, Carl Gustafsson and his brother-in-law, Lars Christensen. The first store was built on the current site of the Cornelius Schoolhouse. In 1827, a sawmill was founded and in 1830, a gristmill. The early settlers were farmers who raised corn, wheat, potatoes and other crops. By 1840, there were 7 businesses in Cornelius with a total payroll of $521. In 1850, a post office was established and by 1865 there were 10 businesses with a combined payroll of $1,812. In 1862 an actgregated Oregon Territory was created including Cornelius as part of it. The following year the first school was built which served grades K-6 until 1921 when it moved to the present location of the Cornelius Schoolhouse. The townspeople decided to build their own jail in 1867 which they did not complete until 1870 because they lacked enough money to do so from state coffers. In 1880 an oil well was drilled near Cornelius and production began soon thereafter providing economic stability for the townspeople and its citizens. By 1890 there were 15 businesses with a combined payroll of $2,041

Decker with a population of just fifteen people. The town grew rapidly during the 1930s when it became an agricultural center for the surrounding area and today has a population of around 350 people. The town features a wide variety of architecture including old-time logging towns, Bungalow Belt homes, and ranch style dwellings dating back to the 1920s. The name Cornelius comes from Native American words meaning "place where snow falls." The first settler in Cornelius was Prentice Halsey who arrived in 1872 with his family from New York City. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it after his hometown of Schenectady, New York. Cornelius experienced its most significant growth during World War II when it became an important depot for military supplies arriving from Japan and Europe. In 1946, the post office was moved to Cornelius from Gladstone because mail deliveries were becoming unreliable due to distance. Today, the post office remains one of the few remaining businesses in Cornelius that functions regularly despite being afflicted by vandalism over time. The local economy depends heavily on agriculture which provides jobs for many locals including farmers, ranchers, mechanics, truck drivers, and more. However, there are also some notable businesses in Cornelius such as Dell Computer Corporation (now known as Inspiron) which opened up shop here in 1994 and has since become one of Oregon's leading technology companies; Jamba Juice which opened up its first store here in 2003; and Nike which built its first factory here in 1998 before moving into their current location adjacent to Interstate 5 near Salem). Cornelious winters have helped make it one of Oregon's most popular tourist destinations while its mild summers offer plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities such as fishing or golfing; both options are easily accessible through nearby highways or bike paths networked throughout the community .
