Cornelius, Oregon is a city in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 14,826 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clackamas County. The name originated from the Donation Land Act of 1853, which gave land to Western Oregon settlers for creation of the state of Oregon. The first permanent settler in Cornelius was George Denny in 1872. By 1876, there were 10 businesses and 100 residents. A post office was established in Cornelius on July 25, 1877. The town site was surveyed by John McLoughlin and it took its name from General James WIlliams Cornelius who led an American force in the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). In 1886, Cornelius became home to both a high school and a college; Portland State Teachers' College (now Portland Community College) opened on November 12th that year with 15 students. A fire destroyed most of downtown Cornelius on December 17th 1886 but it didn't stop the town's growth as new businesses started up and citizens built more homes around what had been lost or damaged during the firestorm. On January 5th 1893, Cornelius became an incorporated city under state law when Judge Augustus Herrington granted its petition for incorporation after hearing testimony from several citizens about how difficult it would be to maintain their community without some form of government control. Buses first served people living near Mount Hood in 1916 and began service to downtown Jerome on May 1st 1917 – this was preceded by private bus services run by local businessmen between those villages until 1926 when public transportation became available throughout all ofClackamas County through Columbian Railway Company buses route 413/413A which reached downtown Jerome every 20 minutes until 1977 when Route 413/413A merged into System Routes 26 & 97
