Hood published an article about "The Noblest Productive Enterprise ever set up on this side of the Rocky Mountains." According to historian Denise Levertov, at that time "Oregon was still almost virgin territory; there were no towns or villages except here." By 1870, however, Cornelia had reached its heyday as a commercial center with over 20 businesses employing 350 people servicing travelers along US 95 northwest from Salem to Grants Pass. In 1900, when Oregon became a state within the United States of America, Cornelia enjoyed some brief prosperity as part of Multnomah County until it too fell victim to federal government interventionism following World War I (the Dust Bowl years). After decades of decline throughout much of Northwest Oregon due largely to population growth in Seattle and other metropolitan areas (and associated economic decline), cornish downtown businesses closed their doors around 1985 after having been unable to keep up with technological advances which made shipping products more efficient online and elsewhere. However mercurial Mayor Jens Hansen resurrected downtown Cornelia nearly intact into what is now known as "the old city" complete with its own water system (initially powered by horse power), fire department (with 14 volunteer firefighters) and gazebo/clocktower/marketplace combo – all while enjoying live music performances nightly from small bars located inside renovated brick buildings lining Main Street . With experienced hands such as City Manager Rick Karrach leading business operators who have kept Cornelia alive since then – including restaurateur Kevin Purdy – it is likely that many similar revitalization efforts are ongoing today should any new development threaten or exceed historical standards set by current proprietors
