The army moved into town on December 5, 1846 and soon started construction on what would become Fort Clatsop. The Napa County militia helped build the fort and gave it their name – Fort Clatsop became known as one of America’s most strategic coastal posts during World War II due to its location between Japan’s bases in California and Oregon. In addition to providing security for Coos Bay, Fort Clatsop also served as a training ground for American soldiers during the Mexican-American War (1848-1849). A detachment from Company D, First Regiment United States Infantry underwent training at Fort Clatsop before departure for Mexico on February 14, 1850. During this time period, local residents donated land near present day Interstate 5 to create an open field where American soldiers could practice maneuvers and battle Indians. On July 1st, 1861, General David Hunter established Camp Pendleton within walking distance ofFortClatopspantlandthe first permanent U.S Army post in Oregon Territory; this site would later become Military Base Davis–Monthan AFB/. In 1870 Captain George Vancouver sailed into Coos Bay on his HMS Discovery Expedition on an exploration voyage that would change American history by bringing back plants and animals never before seen on American soil. On shore he met local people who told him about some land to the north that could be claimed as part of America if he could find it – this led to Vancouver naming the bay "Coos Bay" after Coos Island which he found nearshore when sailing around Cape Horn in 1788-89 during his explorations along North America’s Pacific coast).
