Coos Bay, Oregon is a town on the east coast of Oregon, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem metropolitan area. Coos Bay first became a town in 1879 and was named for Captain John Fenton Coombs and his men who explored the Gulf of Mexico during the Gold Rush era in 1849-1852. In 1885, it became an incorporated city. The city was renamed Coos Bay in 1931 because its geographic location made it one of only two towns on Oregon's entire east coast that were not based upon navigable water supplies (the other being Portland). Coos Bay emerged as a vibrant community thanks to its strong maritime tradition dating back to its early history as a fishing port where vessels from all over came to sell their catches. Today, Coos Bay offers residents access to world-renowned surfing beaches as well as innumerable educational opportunities including highly selective universities like Umpqua Community College and Pacific University. The town has also become known for its annual Oktoberfest celebration which attracts thousands of people from throughout north central Oregon and beyond each October.
The first white people to arrive in Oregon were the Umpqua men who explored the area in 1825. The Umpqua people were a Native American tribe that lived on the east side of the Cascades Mountains. They traveled downriver to where the Willamette River empties into Puget Sound, and then upriver to where it joins the Snake River. In 1841, United States troops arrived in Oregon and began Spanish-American War efforts against Spain. As part of this effort, General James K. Polk ordered General George Armstrong Custer to march westward through central Oregon and take possession of Rogue Valley as part of his campaign against Spanish interests in that region. After reaching Rogue Valley, Custer discovered gold deposits and decided to stay there rather than continue on to Portland because he thought there was more potential for gold atlatls along the way. A small group of investors led by John Sommers set out from Salem,Oregon with two hundred dollars worth of gold coins in October 1848 to find any possible mines around Rogue Valley. They found only a few small veins of gold but did find some silver ore which they brought back with them to Portland. They also founded what is now known as Sommers Mining District
