The history of Coos Bay began with Captain Neilson's party on July 17, 1825 when they set off from the port of Astoria to explore what lay beyond their find at Cape Disappointment. They were the first Europeans to sight the Strait of Juan de Fuca which separates Vancouver Island from mainland America. After four days sailing they made landfall on October 15 at what is now called Point Helene on Hood Canal Peninsula (the present day site of Coos Bay). From here they explored various parts of Hood Canal until reaching Fort Clatsop on December 3rd. In 1828 Captains John Dall and James Cook sailed along the coast looking for a passage to Asia but no success was found so they turned back towards Europe. On January 10th 1830Captain William Bligh passed by Cape Flattery without sighting anything unusual so he thought it must be an uninhabited cape until his ship’s stay at anchor disclosed a stockade stretching out into “15 fathoms deep” with “no particle of wood within reach” behind it! He therefore ordered his men ashore to reconnoiter and discovered that this was no bluff but HMS Discovery had been detained by American admiral Perry while he hunted vessels off California! When news reached England that HMS Discovery had been captured there was great excitement as many people believed that America would soon become a British Colony! Such were sea fever epidemics then raging across most parts of North America!! Aftermath: The Stockade: remained unoccupied for some time as local residents decided to build themselves something more permanent around their new discovery! However when United States Navy Commodore George Vancouver arrived in 1833 he approved building up a fortification around the cape which became USS Pickering later renamed USS Puget Sound (1850-1857) after Rear Admiral Arthur A Puget who commanded US Naval forces during Canada's War Of 1812 against Great Britain
