Coos Bay is a small town in Oregon, United States. The population was 5,492 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Coos County. The entire shoreline of Coos Bay is located within Oregon's Coast Range, which contains mountains to the north and east and a deep ocean trench to the south. The town lies on the mouth of Gulf Styx Creek, just upstream from its confluence with Willamette River. The area around Coos Bay has been settled for over two hundred years by Native Americans who hunted game and gathered plants and sea shells. In 1846, when California became a state, Congress designated Oregon as part of that state; Coos Bay was included in what would become Oregon City. At first, settlers were mostly farmers and their families who grew corn, beans, sugar beets, wheat, potatoes and other crops on large pieces of land grants granted them by the federal government during the fur-trade era. In 1872 wagon trains carrying supplies arrived at Coos Bay from Eastern Washington; these traders founded what would eventually become Portland as they surveyed this new territory for a new port. By 1875 most of what now makes up Portland had been established including coalship yards and an wharf where ships could dock to load or unload cargo before continuing journey downriver to Multnomah Falls or Seattle. The volunteers advanced on Corvallis, Oregon in search of gold and silver ore. The group arrived too late to find any buried treasure, but did discover several mills that were being used to churn out flour for local breadwinners. After exploring the mill sites, the volunteers returned to Corvallis empty-handed. Frémont's brigade also discovered a large coal mine two miles southwest of town. However, as no one was willing to invest in mining operations at this time, these discoveries went unprofited and are now lost in history.
