In 1949, Harry Nadel founded Nadel & Neumann Coffee Company in Portland, Oregon – which became one of America’s leading specialty coffee companies. At first they imported whole bean coffees from Europe; but soon they developed their own roasting methods and began producing fresh roasted coffee exclusively for their customers in Portland . Over time they expanded their production into other states – including Washington , California , Nevada and Arizona – furthering their reputation as America’s Leading Coffee Company . In 1992 they merged with Peet's Coffee Corporation ; this created one of America's largest specialty food retailers .
