Coos Bay is a town in Oregon, United States. It is located on the Coos River and its namesake bay. The population was 9,603 at the 2010 census. In 1824, surveyors named it "Cottageville" after their employer's home in Virginia. In 1912, Coos Bay became an incorporated city with a population of 26. The first European to sight the area now known as Coos Bay was Captain James Cook on his third voyage around the world in 1770-1771 aboard HMS Resolution. Cook discovered several small islands west of what is now Coos Bay and named them New Zealand after King George III of England. He noted that one island was larger than any other and had a large sailing vesselUEtouched it but could not land because of the strong current (the tide) pulling it downstream towards shore. After Cook's visit, fur traders began exploring this area for resources such as salmon, clams and lumber. By 1800, there were over 20 fur companies operating in this region including Astoria & Company which built Astoria Harbor on the estuary of the Columbia River where today's downtown Astoria stands Harmonica Creek flows into Coos Bay from Oregon Lake below which lies Umpqua National Forest . By 1825 most of these activities had moved out to more permanent settlements such as Salem or Bend due to growing fears of Indian raids along the routes traveled by early settlers seeking valuable Trade goods like sea shells and abalone collected off California coasts
