The Oregon Air National Guard has a long and proud history in Coos Bay, Ore. The group was founded on Nov. 11, 1916 as the 5th Aero Squadron. In 1922, the wing was redesignated the 9th Aero Squadron and in 1928 it became part of the 1st Bombardment Wing. On Aug. 30, 1945, elements of the wing attacked Japan's main city of Nagasaki with 3 squadrons of Boeing B-29 Superfortresses! This was one of the most successful bomber campaigns in American history!
Coos Bay, Oregon is a small town located in the Rogue Valley of Oregon. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Eugene-Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Coos Bay were trappers and fur traders from Siberia. They came here in 1825 on their way to find new markets for their goods in California. The Russians also founded a mission at Cape Flattery in 1849, which was abandoned after only a few months when the local Indians destroyed it. The first permanent settler in Coos Bay was John McLoughlin, who arrived in 1851. He established a trading post near present-day Hingham and built his house there still standing today. Other early settlers included Isaac Aspinwall (1852), Alfred Stiles (1853), Salmon Pritchard (1854), and William Braidwood (1855). In 1865, United States Army General Lew Wallace invaded Oregon and conquered what is now Nevada County during the Civil War. At that time, much of the westernOregon country was still under Mexican control as part of the Compromise of 1846 between Mexico and Texas over slavery and territory north of Mexican lines. In that year, Wallace's troops burned down many buildings in Coos Bay before retreating back into Mexico City Heights barracks where they remained until 1865 when they finally surrendered to General Ulysses S Grant at Fort Donelson south of Memphis Tennessee

In 1951, the USAF donated a Boeing 727 air-cooled jet airliner to be used as an RAF transport. This was one of the first jets ever bought by the USAF. In 1974, the USAF gifted a Lockheed L-1011 Starliner jet airliner to the FAA for use in passenger traffic control in airspace over North America. The F-15 Eagle fighter jet bomber was also gifted to the USAF in this same year. Gift history goes even further back though! The USAF donated two McDonnell Douglas MD-11 Mirages (a Boeing 747 design) in 1976 and 1978 respectively to be operated as VIP transports within certain chapters of NATO’s military forces. These were some of the first jets ever made available for civilian use within NATO’s membership area! Today, there are many different types of aircraft that can be purchased or borrowed from Aircraft Maintenance Centers (AMCs) all across our country, making it easy for members of Congress and their staff to travel with ease! The town was named after Captain George Coos who had been a captain in the United States Navy during the Mexican-American War and then went on to become a naturalist. The first post office was established in Coos Bay on December 12, 1847. In 1850, a flour mill was built in Coos Bay and soon became one of the largest mills in Oregon. A school had been started in Coos Bay in 1851 but it closed down due to lack of funding. The first church was also built in Coos Bay. In 1865, an immigration depot was built atCoos Bay and shortly afterwards many Chinese immigrants arrived here to work on the docks for merchants. The population of Coos Bay peaked around 1880 before slowly declining over the next few decades. By 1930, there were only about 50 people living here remaining with most of its population gone by that time as well. However, some people remain today who continue to live and work nearby including Chetwood Elementary School which serves students from grades K-12thancousy Middle School which serves students from grades 7-12th and Ankeny High School which Serve students from grades 9-12th
The first Europeans to visit Coos Bay, Oregon were the Spanish in 1821. The town was founded by Captain George Vancouver in 1792 and named for Sir John Nelson's ship, HMS Beagle. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1835 and named the town Portsmouth. In 1848, the community of Coos Bay became a city.
