In 1892, Canby's first grocery store was opened. It was called the Oregon Grocery and it was located on the corner of Second and Main Streets. The store operated for about a year. In 1893, the first post office in Canby was established. It was called the Oregon Post Office and it served the area until 1907. In 1896, Canby had its first school. It was called Pacific High School and it operated until 1902. The first town hall in Canby appeared in 1898. It was called the First Town Hall and it housed a courtroom and some public functions such as elections or court proceedings. In 1903, Canby had its first library. It was called Pacific Library and it functioned until 1945. In 1914,Canby had its first fire department which consisted of two men with shotguns named Harry Ladd and Hiram Sisson . The department became fully operational in 1918 after being purchased by the town from private owners . In 1915,Canby had its first ambulance service which consisted of one man with a horse named Harry Haverford . The ambulance service became fully operational in 1919 after being purchased by the town from private owners
Canby is a town in Oregon, United States. It was founded in 1885 by James Canby and his wife Jennie. The town has a population of about 2,500 people as of the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what would become Canby was James Canby, who arrived with his family in 1885. Jennie Canby, James' wife, also made her home here for a time before moving to Milwaukie. In 1915, the couple donated land to create the present-day town square on the west side of Main Street. Municipal services were first provided by water fowl keeper Fenton Waddell until 1945 when electricity became available and he sold power to the town hall. Water Supply began with a well drilled in 1907 and continued through many years of improvement until an enlargement that included construction of a new pump house and pipeline added capacity in 2005-2006 which increased water availability from 1 acre per minute up to 3 acre per minute from an original intake located just east of Main Street near First Avenue Bridge; during this project some old infrastructure was rehabilitated including replaced masonry piers which had been built over 100 years prior! Post office opened on July 4th 1886 under name “Milwaukie” after Mrs John A. Milwaukie (1836-1921), daughter of Captain George Hinton Milwaukie (1792-1864) owner/manager Willamette & Co Navigation Company's ship "Natchez". On November 14th 1902 postmaster Jno Lillis changed it back to “Canby” after Mrs Ira Blythe Canby (1868-1932), widow of Geo Blythe (1857-1931), sonof Rev Dr Cornelius Copley Canby (1800-1865). First cashier general store owned by Jacob Beavers opened on December 5th 1906 at corner Third Ave and Main St………. From early days there were several small businesses prospered along Third Ave such as meat market operated by Dolphus Tryon from 1865 until 1903 when he closed due to low profits….. Adobe ranching started about 1912 when brothers Alfred & Sidney Olson bought 160 acres south of town boundary… By 1916 lumber was being shipped out via Portland packing house

The town reopened on January 8, 1944 after being closed for six months due to wartime restrictions on mail delivery. In 1957, Canby became the site of Oregon's first state fairgrounds when they were donated by local landowners to the state government as part of an agreement that allowed Oregon cities and towns to annex land into their limits. The fairgrounds remain an important part of community life today and are used for various events such as hunting shows, rodeos, concerts and tradeshows.
