Coffee was probably brought over by traders from South America when they visited the region during the early 1800s. The first coffee mills were started in Canby in 1868 and the town began to boom with its growing trade. Today, Canby is home to some of the best-quality coffee beans in all of Oregon. The town was originally named "Canby" after Captain George Vancouver's ship, HMS Columbia, which anchored there on his trip up the Columbia River in 1792. The name stuck and Haslemere, another small town nearby took on the same name in 1867. In 1938, Canby residents voted to change their name to "Portland." The change came about because Portland had become more popular than Canby and people felt that Portland was more like their town culturally. The first coffee Bean Grinders appeared around 1850 in Illinois and these machines ground whole beans into flour or sugar syrup form which then could be baked or used as pastries or snacks! Coffee became very popular among Americans during this time period as it was believed that it could help improve cognitive health due to its caffeine content (Atkinson & Prentice). However, despite its popularity throughout history,coffee wasn't actually banned anywhere until 1971 when it was outlawed as a stimulant under California law (Lopez). This law stemmed from concerns that caffeine might be addictive and lead people to use excessive amounts instead of getting adequate sleep (Flynn). Fortunately, this ban overturned years later when scientists found out that caffeine can actually have neuroprotective effects (Goudreau). Canby, Oregon is a small town in the Willamette Valley of western Oregon, located on the banks of the Willamette River. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census and 6,052 as of 2015. Canby has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 2,000 years and was named after a local river. The first European to visit Canby was John Sellers in 1853. In 1876, J.P. Morgan sent his son John to investigate claims of gold in what is now Canby but he did not find any gold and returned home empty-handed. After Morgan's death in 1887, his son George took over running his father's business ventures and expanded into other interests including real estate development and shipping. In 1915, George married Ollie Mae French who had also come to live in Canby from nearby Burnside along with her two children - Norma (born 1916) and Tom French (1918). With World War I coming to an end and Europe experiencing economic recession, Ollie began looking for ways to help support her husband's businesses while keeping everyone close knit during these difficult times. She hired able individuals such as her brother-in-law Harry Dent (1914-2009) who worked as an accountant for their company then went on to become one of the largest land developers in Oregon – legislation that legalized annexation of new lands into Multnomah County followed soon afterwards! In 1978 Canby incorporated as a city under the name "Canby" which served as its primary identifier until it changed back to its original community name in 1997 when it became part of Portland after being reincorporated within Multnomah County boundaries! The history of coffee here goes back many years before Starbucks opened up shop hereabouts! One such coffee house that operated briefly around 1899 or 1900 is said to be The Star Coffee House located at 201 SW 11th Ave., Suite 204B. According from oral history researcher Loretta Kappenhofer “The Star’s owner/operator was Reuben Snyder who ran it about ninety days shorty due(to lack OF customers),” citing accession number 2552410 from November 25th 1901 which records “A purchase by Reuben Snyder from G[eorge] Neuman for $2 worth OF Turkish Coffee beansQuantity 50 lbs typewritten note attached: G[eorge] Neuman Sent $1 cashier’s check no # 9089 dated Dec 14 1902 For Snyder This coffee house will closing up shop Jan 1st 1902 due(to inability TO get customer base.)

Banking businesses soon sprang up and today Canby has a variety of businesses including three banks, a post office, two restaurants, several stores and six churches within its boundaries. Canby's economy depends on agriculture which produces hay, wheat, apples and other vegetables; mining which offers lead and zinc; lumber; fishing; tourism; and manufacturing such as paper products, clothing and shoes. The community active primarily through its schools which have been providing quality instruction since 1900: 1 high school (1901), 2 middle schools (1905-present), 3 elementary schools (1910-present), A library/community center/multi-purpose room addition (2007) And 1 comprehensive school serving grades 7-12 as well as adult education classes for adults only!
Canby, Oregon was founded by John Canby in 1847. It became a census-designated place in 1930 and the city of Canby was incorporated in 1935. The population of the city increased to over 30,000 people by 1959, and it had become an agricultural center with a large dairy operation.
