Bend, Oregon is a small town in the eastern Oregon Panhandle. The town was founded on December 15, 1859 by Captain George Dearborn and his wife, Chloe Dearborn. It was named after the Bend in Western Oregon which is about 120 miles from Bend. In 1881, a post office was established in Bend and the name of the town remained unchanged until 1959. The first settlers in what is now Bend were families of British descent who arrived from Canada in 1849. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Deschutes River and changed their name to “Bend†because they were unable to find any other towns with that name in Oregon. The first school in Bend was established in 1858 and it was called “Hills School†because there were no hills around bend at that time. When Captain Dearborn moved his family to Benton County in 1861 he started an agricultural business which became very successful and helped support the growth of Bend. He also donated land for a Methodist Church which was built between 1865 and 1888, making him one of the first non-profit organizations to operate within Oregon society. Theodore Roosevelt visited Bend during his 1897UI trip through central Oregon and wrote about it then: “The old adage that backwoods people are uneducated may have some truth as to some extent; but we must not forget that among our own people there are many intelligent men who lead interesting lives outside their homes...It will be interesting to see how fast this rusticity (or lack thereof) will disappear when schools open up all over these regions everywhere where only ignorance prevails...There is reason for hope that similar progress can be made hereabouts throughout all of Oregon even if we should experience some reverses for several years yet...I am sure I speak with authority when I say that I have never seen anything more beautiful than this little community located near [the Deschutes River] on high ground watered by great rivers†(Roosevelt). During World War II, much work took place at nearby Boeing plants including production of Tacoma torpedoes which led to locals being called "Tacoma torpedoes" due to their similarityin shape and size! Notable residents include Mayor Edwin Armstrong who served from 1946-1957, Lloyd Webber whose home still stands today as part of Heritage Park off Broadview Boulevard (now Euclid Avenue), Charlie Manson who lived adjacent thereto until 1984, followed by Steve Jobs whose childhood home still stands today on Industrial Road just east of US 101! The city's main thoroughfare has been renamed "Edwin Armstrong Boulevard" following Mayor Armstrong's death in 2007! Reverend Father Don Whitehead serves as pastor at Sacred Heart Catholic Church located across from City Hall (once known as City Hall Annex). Oregon Route 101 runs through downtown along Main Street while Commercial Drive leads out towards Interstate 5 interchange northwest of downtown before turning northeast towards Rogue Valley National Forest
