Bend, Oregon is a small town located in the Cascade Range of western Oregon. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It has been inhabited for over two centuries and owes its existence to the construction of the Oregon Trail by American pioneers in 1847. The first permanent settler in Bend was James Howden, who arrived in 1847. Howden built a log cabin on what is now U.S. Route 97 and named it Home Valley after his home state of Virginia. Other early settlers included John Beckwith and George Stephenson. The first post office was established in 1849, and the first store opened in 1850. In 1861, Bend became part of Deschutes County when it was organized from parts of Jackson County and Lincoln County respectively. The growth of Bend during the late 19th century was due to its location as an important railway junction between Portland and Seattle; as well as its status as a commercial center with a variety of businesses including mills, shoe stores, hotels, banks, newspapers, breweries and tanneries. The railroad also allowed for increased trade among the various communities within range of Bend’s expanding interests such as Willamette Falls (northwest), Corvallis (southwest), Hood River (southwest), North Bend (northeast) and Arlesburg (east). This growth also led to significant alterations to Benton Street which became known as “the Avenue Of Progress” because so many businesses located there attracted tourist traffic during this time period
