Bend, Oregon is a small town in the area of The Cascades. It is located on the Columbia River, about 30 miles northwest of Portland and 40 miles east of Seattle. Bend, Oregon is a city in Benton County, Oregon, United States. The population was 23,527 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Columbia River near the confluence of the Snake and Willamette Rivers. The area now known as Bend was first populated by Native Americans who hunted and collected game in what is now central Benton County. In 1824, General George Armstrong Custer camped at this location while his army invaded California. After his defeat at Black Hawk Creek Bridge Trials (1826), Custer's retreating party discovered an estuary on the river where they built a bridge to cross. This event helped start what is now called "Custer's Crossing". In 1848, Reuben Goldthwait organized the first drive into Mexico for American settlers looking for land to settle in Oregon. He named his new settlement of Fort Hall after General Ulysses S. Grant's headquarters during much of that campaign. Goldthwait also founded The Dalles downstream from Fort Hall and started trading with Mexican traders there before moving upstream to present-day Bend in 1851 when he met John Sutter, founder of Sacramento Valley Rancho Niguel (Rancho San Joaquin). In 1863, theater magnate Andrew Carnegie contributed money to build a railroad through central Oregon so people could get jobs away from eastern cities such as New York City and Boston. With this railroad came jobs and businesses throughout Central Oregon which led to growth in Bend and other towns near it during the late 19th century until World War I slowed down development along the rail line east of Bend due to conflict over issues like mining rights; however, new bridges were constructed over these rivers connecting Bend with other parts of Central Oregon during that time period.
