Army gift history in Bend, Oregon begins with the United States Army Corps of Engineers. This organization was established on February 15, 1869 and was known as the Engineer General Staff. The corps’ mission was to provide engineering support for the US military and its allies. On November 3, 1915, the US Army Signal Corps was established as part of the Engineer General Staff. The corps’ mission was to provide communication services for military commanders and units. In 1943, the army created a separate branch called Radio Intelligence Service (RIS). RIS was responsible for gathering intelligence information from enemy forces across all battlefields. In 1967, Military Order Number 9014 created an infantry battalion within the Engineer General Staff called 1st Battalion Combat Infantry Regiment (1-BICIR) which later became 2nd Battalion Combat Infantry Regiment (2-BCIR). The battalion served in Vietnam before being disbanded on October 5th, 1971. On December 12th of that same year, 1st Battalion Combat Infantry Regiment (1-BICIR) reorganized under Marine Forces Reserve Command as 3rd Battalion Combat Infantry Regiment (3-BCIR). The battalion served in Okinawa until it disbanded on September 25th of 1972. On May 20th of 1973, 4th Brigade Signal Company activated at Fort Lewis National Cemetery in Olympia Washington as part of preparations for Operation Neptune Spear which would take place three days later when North Korea invaded South Korea. 4th Brigade Signal Company provided signals services throughout both campaigns and is still present at Fort Lewis today providing communications support to military ceremonies and missions worldwide.
Bend, Oregon is a small town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The population was 11,582 at the 2010 census and 12,557 at the 2013 estimate. It is the largest city in Deschutes County and part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first people to live in Bend were Native Americans who hunted and gathered local plants and animals. For many years it was one of the most remote places in Oregon. In 1855, Jedediah Smith discovered gold on the nearby riverine plain and soon Benton became known as the “Gilded Age” for its large investments in this new industry. By 1900, Bend had become an important commercial center with a growing population of African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and refugees from World War I living among white people. Bend, Oregon is a small town in the Cascade Mountains of western Oregon. The population was 993 as of July 1, 2015, according to the 2010 Census. The town is an unincorporated community located in Linn County. It lies within the Bend-Eugene-Thedford Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Bend were traders and travelers who passed through the area on their way to or from the Hudson Bay Company's post at Fort George.[1] In 1828, Francis Drake founded what is now downtown Bend after his explorations of the Columbia River Valley during his circumnavigation of North America. By 1840, settlers had moved into what is now downtown Bend and started building homes. The first school was built in 1842 by Rev. James Waddell and served students from Bentonville westward until it closed in 1846 because of lack of facilities. A second school opened in 1865 by Jepson Gee; it operated until 1870 when it was replaced by a church which still operates today as Bend's oldest standing structure.[2] Development slowed down around 1900 due to factors such as World War I (1914–18) which destroyed many homes and businesses, Dust Bowl conditions in the 1930s which damaged crops, and then World War II (1939–1945) which caused extensive destruction throughout central Oregon including much of downtown Bend. In 1962, while still part of Linn County,[3] Bend became unincorporated when its residents voted not to join any county governments other than their own.[4][5] As a result of this decision, ordinances that regulated zoning were no longer effective at local level and development continued unchecked for several decades; this led to some notable buildings – such as Stroud Hall – being built without permits or
In 1855, the United States government acquired land in what is now Bend, Oregon. The site had been occupied by the Klamath people for centuries and was considered a sacred place. The US government paid $3,000 to purchase the land from the tribe and began to develop it into a town. In 1865, Bend became part of the newly formed Portland Territory. Bend grew quickly as an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and easy access to water resources. By 1916, Bend had over 1,500 residents and was home to two banks, three schools, a post office and a hospital. In 1942, when World War II started, Bend helped support the war effort by manufacturing munitions and equipment for the military. During postwar years, Bend experienced growth as an entertainment destination thanks to its proximity to Portland and its abundance of natural resources. In 1984, Bend became the first city in Oregon to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
