Beaverton, Oregon is home to the Portland Beavers, an American football team that has played in the National Football League (NFL) since 1976. The team's history can be traced back to 1936, when a group of local students pooled their money and bought tickets to watch the Portland Packers play atcapacity stadium. As the game went on, they realized that there was no way for them to get tickets again so they decided to turn around and come home. The next year, they met up with some friends who had also been turned away from the stadium and started buying tickets together. They named themselves the "Beaverton Packers" and played their first game against Portland State University on October 2nd, 1938. Over time, they became more popular and won two championships in 1941 and 1944. In 1946, they changed their name to the "Portland Beavers" after being offered a chance by then-owners ofthe NFL’s Baltimore Colts to join them as an expansion team in Philadelphia. After several years of playing in various cities across America, they finally made it backto Beaverton where they currently play today. Throughout their history, the Beaverton Packers have exhibited many different styles of play including college football (which is where their nickname originated), professional football (they were one of only two teams in NFL history to make it into Super Bowls), ice hockey (they are currently members of Hockey America), rugby union (they won a national championship in 2002), wrestling (their most famous wrestler was Greg Valentine who wrestled under manager Dusty Rhodes), as well as other sports such as golfing and bowling which have all been successful too. Beaverton, Oregon is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 24,546 at the 2010 census. Beaverton is the largest city in the county and the second most populous city in Oregon after Portland. It is home to many research institutions includingOregon Health and Science University (OHSU), Portland State University, and U of O. Beaverton's economy relies heavily on education and technology companies such as Hewlett-Packard Co., Oracle Corporation, Facebook Inc., Microsoft Corp., Adobe Systems Incorporated and Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors. The first permanent settler in what is now Beaverton was John Day who arrived from England on September 12th 1836 with his brother David Day. They established a farm just outside of town which they named Harmony Grove after their sister Harmony Day who had moved there from Missouri two years earlier. In 1838 John Day married Mary Heald who came to Beaverton from Mayfield Township, Washington Territory. The First Congregational Church was organized in that year by Reverend Amos Kendall with sessions being held at various locations until it moved to its current location near Northwest Fourth Avenue and SW Morrison Street in 1840. On July 7th 1843 John Dyson purchased 640 acres of land east of downtown from David Day for $5 per acre which he donated to the community for use as a parkland area known today as Dyson Park. The first school in Beaverton opened on October 26th of that year when the School District #1 started teaching children grades one through four at what is now called Pioneer Hall which was then located on Third Street between Morrison and Douglas streets across from City Hall). In 1845 David Day sold 640 acres surrounding what is now Downtown Beaverton to George Wright for $10 per acre which he donated to the community for use as an open space known today as Wright Park (now part of Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area). On December 3rd 1850 Rev Dr James Brough founded Central Methodist Episcopal Church located where NW Third Avenue meets Morrison Street within present-day Dyson Park having previously served as both a meeting house and cemetery for the townspeople. In 1861 Pacific Telegraph Company established a telegraph line between Portland and Seattle using equipment owned by DavidDay including three miles of cable laid down through downtown Beaverton linking Union Station northward with what are now NE Sixth Avenue & McLoughlin Boulevard eastward before terminating at Salmon Pass westward (the original course being NE Seventh Avenue & Starkweather Road). This line remains intact today operating under NEMC Communications Corporation name as PBX 2E – Line 2 providing telephony services over Comcast Xfinity Cable Network utilizing copper microwave lines leased from Google LLC.) By 1865 all public schools were closed due to financial difficulties caused by transportation problems caused by changes brought about by railroads entering into town - this left beavertons only private primary/middle/high school until 1915 when OSU began offering classes through its Division of Education program leading eventually to PSU becoming undergraduate college status while OHSU became graduate university status in 1946) On November 15th 1888 local residents voted by referendum to become incorporated into Multnomah County pursuant to provisions set out in section 9(a) of Act No 41st Legislature approved February 10th 1889 created "The County Commissioners Department" within said newly formed county government effective March 1st 1889 consisting "...of six members appointed by commissioners...to hold office during their pleasure’." As part of said department Beaverton would also receive representation on both boards responsible for building products & construction materials; revenue collection; land assessment; justice court proceedings; real estate matters etc.). Fremont and others as a trading post on the banks of the Willamette River. Beaverton grew quickly and in 1850 it became the first city in Oregon. It was named for General George Vancouver, who explored what is now Oregon in 1792 and named it after his home country of British Columbia.
