The name Beaverton originated from a location called Beaver Creek on the east bank of the river. In 1847, J.D. Beavers and his family settled in what is now Beaverton and began to use the creek for irrigation purposes. The first post office was established in 1851, and the name was changed to Beaverton in 1892 to reflect its new location. The economy of Beaverton has been largely based on manufacturing since its incorporation as an unincorporated community in 1903; however, it has also experienced growth as a bedroom community for Portland metropolitan area residents over the past several decades.
