Beaverton, Oregon is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 42,853 at the 2010 census. Beaverton's history dates back to 1845 when Captain John McLoughlin and his party of exploration set out from Portland on their way to found a new trading post in present-day Oregon. They passed through what is now Beaverton on their way east. In 1857, the town was platted as part of the Willamette Valley railroad system and named after General George Washington Beavers who had served in the United States Army during the Mexican–American War and also took part in founding Multnomah County. The first post office opened in 1858, and it continued serving until 1901. The city's demographics have undergone significant change over its history; most notably during World War II when Beaverton became an important manufacturing center for munitions production. It has since become a predominately residential community with strong commercial interests located along Interstate 5 and Interstate 84
