Beaverton is a city in Oregon, located in the Central Oregon Mountains. The population was 453 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metropolitan area. The town was named for George Washington's son, Benjamin West (1777–1845), who had married Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol from a previous marriage. The first settlers were Norwegian immigrants led by Captain John Aasland and his wife Katheryn Aasseland, who arrived on horseback from Norway on October 12, 1837. They built a log cabin near present-day Happy Valley and took up farming. In 1841, two brothers founded the town of Corvallis as an agricultural center because they could not get seed to grow in Beaverton. In 1847, James McMurtry opened the first store in what is now Beaverton when he moved from Bendigo, Oregon with his family and began selling goods to farmers and miners throughout central Oregon. In 1850, Jens Olsen started a sawmill operating out of what is now the old post office building in downtown Beaverton; it would be one of the largest mills in Oregon until it closed its doors in 1957. The town's first school was built on State Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue in 1851; it would later be renamed School District No. 1 headquarters after that district became known statewide for education]. The town also developed a rural community around church services which continued until about 1915 when all religious services were moved out of town into larger schools or churches within walking distance of each other. In 1903, Charles Wiman settled down in what is now Beaverton with his wife Gertrude and their three children after moving from Salem County, New York where he had been employed as an editor for "The Rochester Times Union". Wiman ran a grocery store before becoming manager of several businesses including lumberyards and breweries before starting his own logging company which bought land east of Beaversfield Lake to build mills there; these operations are still ongoing today as Cascade Lumber Co.. In 1907 Wiman partnered with Royce Larsen to form Larsen & Wiman Insurance Company which would become one of Beaverton's most successful businesses over its many years; it currently operates as Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company registered with the state).
