Ashland is a town located in Ashland County, Oregon, United States. The population was 3,816 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from an early county seat, Ashland Township, which was named for General Nathaniel Bowles. The first store opened in 1851 and by 1860 there were six stores in the community. By 1890 there had grown to twelve stores with a total population of 2,815. In 1902 the City of Ashland was born when it merged with neighboring towns Willamette and North Bend to form one municipality. In 1960 the city annexed parts of nearby towns La Grande and Salem along with portions of Hermiston and Enterprise to form its current boundaries; this annexation left Ashland with only three stores remaining within its original borders. Ashland, Oregon is a small town in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 981 at the 2010 census. As of the 2016 Census, Ashland had a population of 1,554. The first people to live in what is now Ashland were Native Americans. In 1846,erowan settlers Captain George Vancouver and his family set out from Portland on their way to Gold Rushtown in Nevada Territory. They erected a log cabin on the northeast corner of present-day Oregon Route 97 and State Route 26A (now part of US 101) and named it "Ashland." In 1847 James Kapp established a store near the present day intersection of Oregon Routes 97 and 26A for trading with the Indians and prospecting for gold. Kapp's store was destroyed by fire in 1848 but he rebuilt it at what is today Pennsylvania Avenue NE. By 1850 there were ten stores in Ashland; six were Indian stores and four were white settlements operated by men who had come over from Portland or Bendigo, Australia. The settlement began to grow rapidly due to the discovery of gold around Geyserville on July 7, 1850 by John Cramer (1807-49), an American miner working for Edward Henty & Co., led by George Vancouver Jr.. Over time other investors followed suit until there were twenty-one businesses operating in Ashland by 1860. Mining activity increased as more and more reefs appeared along the stream that ran through town; some sources say as much as 20% of all revenue came from mining operations during this time frame. The first school was built in 1861; instruction began with one week per month until November 1st when a second building was constructed adjacent to First Methodist Church which served as both school and church until 1886 when it burned down).
