Military gift history in Ashland, Oregon began with the purchase of a rifle by Captain John C. Cook from the Black Hills Rifle and Gun Store on December 5th, 1892. The store was founded by Captain Cook and his wife Christina in 1875. The first guns purchased at the store were shotguns. In 1898, the store changed its name to the Ashland Armory and began selling rifles and handguns. The first military gift ever given in Ashland was a Colt revolver to Lieutenant General James Biddle on November 15th, 1894. Biddle served as Commandant ofthe Military Academy at West Point from 1886-1892. He was then appointed Lieutenant Colonel of Infantry in 1893 and Major General of Infantry in 1896. While serving as LtColonel at West Point he received an order from President Grover Cleveland offering him command of all United States forces east of Mexico City if he could find suitable officers to lead them. After fulfilling this request Colfax returned to America where he died on October 12th, 1899 leaving behind a void that would be filled by Biddle’s successorł Commodore George Dewey who served for two terms as Secretary of War under Franklin D Roosevelt before becoming Governor of New York State during World War II). In 1907 Captain Cook donated an automatic weapon known today as the Colt Smith & Wesson No 1 Model 1911 Pistol to Mayor Edwin Stanton (now Edwin Mims) for use by city police officers for protection during street demonstrations against white supremacy that had become common after Slavery ended in Oregon Territory in 1840 AGO. This firearm is now housed at the firearms museum owned and operated by The Oregonian Newspaper Company located adjacent to University Park Cemetery since 1912 when it was gifted to Portland Mayor Clifton Fletcher following his election victory over incumbent Hugh Nye (D).

Ashland is a small town in Oregon, located about an hour's drive from Portland. The population was 3,717 at the 2010 census, making it the largest community in Ashland County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ashland were Native Americans who made trade contacts with the local tribes. In 1824, John McLoughlin and his band of fur traders explored what is now Oregon and reported seeing what they thought was a great city on the riverbank. This led to some confusion as to whether this was Portland or Ashland and folklore has it that when McLoughlin arrived in town he ordered all residents to build him a big house out of white ash so he could see it from where he traveled downriver on his trips looking for new land to explore. In 1847, George Yount started trading goods with the Yakima Nation east of Salem and soon realized that there were rich deposits of coal under hills near Whatcom County. He founded Yount Coal Company with two partners in 1865 which became one of America’s biggest independent coal companies before being merged into Peabody Energy in 2000. On July 4th, 1889, settlers from Illinois founded Oregon City on an island in Hood Canal just north of present-day Ashland after spending three weeks exploring rafted overlands from Astoria Bay northeastward through Jackson County. On October 12th (the exact day) by proclamation by President Benjamin Harrison as part of Territorial Expansion Week activities at Fort Vancouver along Hood Canal,Oregon City becameashland (Oregon Territory). In 1893 Ladd & Garfield opened their hardware store at 5th Ave S., later becoming Ladd’s Hardware Co., still operates today as a family-owned business with more than 100 employees statewide. During World War II munitions manufacturer Allis Chalmers built several large naval ships yard here including USS Oregon (BB-43), USS Rhode Island (AGI-5), USS Tacoma (PGT-19), USS Los Angeles (CLP-8), USS Spokane (PNR-2),and USNS Halsey Island WA(LHASIWA). In 1951 Allis Chalmers sold its assets to General Electric for $4 billion dollars creating GE Pacific Division which operated until 1994 when it merged into Tyco International plc.. At various points during its history GE Pacific Division included operations such as Alcoa Aluminum Products Incorporated; Anadarko Petroleum Corporation; Bechtel National Corporation; Boeing Company; Consolidated Mining & Manufacturing Company; Dow Chemical Company;; General Electric Company;; Honeywell International Incorporated;; Kellogg Brown & Williamson Companies Incorporated.; Lockheed Martin Corporation;; The North American Paperconsuming Corporation.; United Steelworkers Local 7888.(present day IGE); Western Shipbuilding Corp.(now Kaiser Permanente)
