Ashland, Oregon is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 13,815 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Ashland University and other educational institutions. The first permanent settler in what would become Multnomah County was James Kapp in 1848. In 1863, John C. Frémont founded the town of Battle Ground on the Astoria River to serve as a base for his ill-fated attempted San Francisco Peninsula Expedition. This town was abandoned by 1867 when gold was discovered in that area instead. In 1872, George Meeker named a stream after him and laid out a town around it on land that he had bought from Governor John McLoughlin ofOregon Territory. The name "Meeker" may have been inspired by General George Armstrong Custer's last stand at Little Bighorn during the Rough Riders Campaign of1876 where he was killed. On May 12, 1875, Multnomah County voters passed an ordinance creating Ashland as its first incorporated municipality with a population of 10 people; it included only part of present day Salem Township which would be annexed into Ashland in 1895. In 1907 multitudes came to drive out wild animals living on their farms following reports from explorers who claimed to have found large amounts of gold near the city limits.; this also sparked development around Main Street including brickyards and quarries for building materials plus several hotels; these were originally built as “race track” hotels catering mostly to American soldiers quartered nearby during World War I and II who used them as barracks and mess facilities while stationed in or visiting Ashland (or any other city). Ashland became known nationally for its many high school football championships won by both Clackamas County High School (now Portland Community Colleges) (then primarily an all-boys school) and Lane Community College beginning in 1951 before those schools merged into Portland State University athletic teams becoming PSU Rams starting with the 1957 season then changing again to PSU Blazers becoming PSU Cougars beginning with the 1971 season before finally ending up being PSU Pirates starting with the 2003 season but now playing their home games at PDX Stadium under new name: Pete Maravich Athletic Park

At that time, most people in eastern Oregon lived on waterbodies such as Cline Creek and Tualatin River while those living on the flatlands around Bend and Salem built homes around Fort Vancouver (now called Pioneer Square). In 1862 an act was passed which designated most of what is now north centralOregon as federal public land comprising over 12 million acres (46 million hectares). This area became known as The Great Western Lands Project with responsibility for managing these lands vested with the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Thanks to this public land acquisition and development program and investment by local businessmen John Dillard and his son Dillard & Sons Coal Mining Company owners Alfred Pembroke II and Eugene Deasy respectively; coal mining commenced operations along Willamette Valley Railroad east of present day Ashland starting in 1865 followed by other mines throughout much of The Great Western Lands Project including several large open-pit mines located in what are today rural areas northeast Of Portland until 1974 when these operations were closed due to high costs associated with surface soil health problems caused by years spent underground without proper ventilation/maintenance!
