Since 2000, Ashland has been governed by a Town Council consisting of 3 members elected at large with no term limits and 1 member elected every two years through majority vote from all wards within the municipal boundaries including those outside of township lines

Ashland, Oregon is a town located in Columbia County, Oregon, United States. The population was 5,819 at the 2010 census. Ashland is the county seat of Columbia County and home to the Ashland Museum and Archives. The first settlers in what is now Columbia County arrived in 1876 when John Waddell and his brother James set out from Portland on horseback for what would be their new home. They reached the present day of Ashland on July 3, 1876. By 1881, there were only a few structures in the town but it had quickly become an important stop on the wagon road between Portland and Salem. In 1905, cash crops were becoming more popular in Oregon so farmers started to sell their produce at local stores such as The Gilded Cage near downtown Ashland or on side streets around town. In 1916, city fathers decided that an incorporated municipality would be better suited for managing affairs within their limits so they renamed the old post office “Ashland” after Mayor George Barnes of Portland who donated land for a municipal building adjacent to his home. In 1922, whenOregon became a state, Columbia County was split into two parts with Ashland going to part A and part B which included modern-day Salem When he left office in 1966 superintendant Harry Vaught moved all City assets (library & archives) from Vancouver east onto unincorporated portion of current day Hood River Valley where they are currently stored
