Ashland, Oregon is a city in Butte County, Oregon, United States. The population was 12,995 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what is now Butte County were the Umatilla and Nisqually Indians. The first European to visit Butte County was Captain George Vancouver in 1795. In 1847, Mormon pioneers arrived in Oregon and began building Cache Valley Farms east of town on land grant from President James K. Polk. By 1850, most of present-day Butte County had been settled and more than 50 businesses were operating in downtown Ashland when it became a city on December 15, 1855 with 524 residents according to the US Census Bureau's report of that year. The early years of Ashland were full of growth and progress but also some hard times due to many challenges including lack of transportation options and limited resources such as water availability which made farming possible only until about 1930 despite advances in irrigation systems which greatly increased crop production during this time period throughout much of North America (see: History Of Oregon). After purchasing some additional land at Park Lane, Washington began building his own home on it – called “The Log Cabin” – which he named after his friend and neighbor (and fellow Albany native) Amos Parkman. This initial settlement served as the nucleus around which Ashland grew over time. One major factor responsible forAshland’s growth was its location close to various transportation options; this included easy access to railroads, highways and waterways. One such exposure was provided by McClellan Street; which ran parallel to both Interstate 5 and Highway 99W throughout much of its length until it was truncated at what is now Pioneer Square). This roadway served as an conduit between Portland and rural eastern Oregon; thus providing convenient access not only for merchants but also for travelers seeking destinations like Astoria or Salem respectively. In addition, many residents took advantage of public transportation available throughout the city; including ferries departing from both sides of McClellan Street across Insular Waterway Number 2 (later renamed Salmon River). As a result,ashlanders rapidly became familiar with their surroundings and developed close relationships with their neighbors unique to that region – something that continues today despite suburbanization efforts throughout much of Oregon
