Ashland, Oregon is a small city located in the Wallowa Valley of eastern Oregon. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. Oregon State Route 5 (SR 5) runs through town center with access from SR 99/NE 44th Street east to Interstate 515/SE 122nd Avenue west; SR 99 also leads southwest out of town towards Vancouver and Hood River counties via US 97 before turning northeast towards Grand Teton National Park Exit 736 (the Teton exit). As with all towns in Jackson County except for downtown Salem which has no commercial or vehicular access beyond SE 82nd Avenue, most people living in Ashland work either inside or outside Portland or other adjacent municipalities including Hillsboro and Beaverton but there are a few homes dialysis patients who stay within the limits set forth by health officials because those facilities are located close by (on SE 92nd Avenue just south of I-5). According to the United States Census Bureau, Ashland has a total area of , all land. It is the largest city on the Columbia River Gorge and one of the oldest cities on the Columbia River. The area around what is now Ashland was first settled by people from eastern Washington and British Columbia in 1853. In 1876, Portland was founded as a branch of Seattle and Ashland became part of Portland. In 1920, Multnomah County was created from parts of Oregon and Washington counties, including Ashland. In 1924, Multnomah County annexed most of Confederated Tribes of The Klondike Region (CTKR), making it the only county in Oregon to have such an annexation. In 1959–1960 during the height of the Cold War when some residents were concerned about possible Russian intervention inMultnomah County they lobbied for development around Coeur d'Alene Air Force Base which would make it easier for American military personnel stationed there to be seen by Moscow-watchers flying over Multnomah County skies without fear that their activities might be discovered or reported back to Moscow. This proposal failed but marked another example where local officials attempted to curry favor with powerful interests in order to get something they wanted from those who controlled them politically or financially
Ashland, Oregon was founded in 1853 by Captain John C. Frémont and his wife Annabella. The town was named for the Ashland tree, which is found in the area. In 1858, the United States Post Office was established in Ashland, and the first postmaster was J.D. Richardson. In 1861, a railroad line was built through Ashland from Grants Pass to Medford, and in 1865, the railroad closed down due to lack of funds. In 1868, a sawmill and flour mill were built in Ashland; these mills remain operational today. In 1886, an agricultural fair was held in Ashland; this fair is now known as the Oregon Agricultural Fair. The first school in Ashland was constructed on property that is now part of Pioneer High School; this school opened in 1892. A library was also established inAshland at this time; this library remains open today. In 1916-1917, World War I broke out and many people from around Oregon enlisted into military service; as a result, many jobs were lost during wartime years. However, after war ended some new businesses began to open up and workers were brought back into the community; these businesses include a grocery store (now called Fred Meyer), two banks (now Wells Fargo Bank), several hotels/motels/, three churches (one being Grace Episcopal Church), two dozen residences (including one that still stands today!), four restaurants/bars/, six stores (), five schools (), three trade shows () and dozens of other businesses ().
