Fenton's son John Fenton Jr. moved from his father's log cabin to make himself a Farmer & Stockman outfitting stagecoaches between Portland and Salem; he became one of the first settlers in what would becomeAshland In 1838, Nathaniel Currier purchased about three hundred acres of land northeast of present day downtownAshland from John Cavanaugh for $3 per acre This property would become much more important as it lay right along the proposed route of an ambitious canal project being developed by developer James Kappelman called "the Columbia Road" which would connect Portland with Seattle via Interstate 541 When Kappelman failed to gain financing for his canal project within two years, he sold his shares in it to George Webberley who renamed it "the Columbia Canal Company" and began construction on it anyway webberley died suddenly just before its inauguration so control passed to fellow entrepreneur Orson Welles who abandoned it 8 miles northeast of whereashLAND situates today welles' building still stands today
