The Oregon Air National Guard (OANA) was activated on February 14, 1913 as the 1st Fighter Squadron at Salem-Keizer Field. The squadron's first mission was to protect the city of Portland from a possible attack by a band of Mexican bandits. In 1915, the OANA became part of the United States Army and its First Army Divisional flying units were redesignated as fighter groups and these groups were redesignated again in 1917 when air service became an integral part of World War I. In 1919, Headquarters Group moved from Salem-Keizer Field to Heidolph Field near Spokane Washington where it remained until 1937 when it relocated back to Ashland to become Headquarters and Service Group (H&SG). This group was disbanded on October 15, 1945. The United States Air Force (USAF) is a branch of the United States military that is responsible for providing air support to American citizens and interests abroad. The USAF was founded in 1947 as the independent US Air Force Reserve, and became an full-time service in 1955. Today, the USAF employs more than 120,000 people across 12 lines of duty including Air Combat Command (ACC), which oversees all fighter aircraft; Aeronautics Command (AAC), which manages airspace and naval forces; Special Operations Command (SOCOM), which provides covert action capabilities; and Intelligence Community Management Agency (ICMA). Air power has been a mainstay of US strategy since World War I when America first declared war on Germany. In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt activated the Army's First Air Force to provide aerial cover for Operation Torch, invading Spain to oust Francisco Franco from power. In 1945, Truman activated Second Air Force to provide combat support forbumps during the atomic bombing campaign against Japan. TheAAF also played a significant role in later wars such as Vietnam and Iraq by providing airlift into those theaters in support of ground forces. Today, USAF assets are deployed around the world in order to respond quickly to crises or defend American interests anywhere in the world at any time. Dozens of different types of aircraft offer operational flexibility and allow USAF commanders to conduct wide-ranging operations with minimal warning or coordination requirement. The Ashland Flying Tigers of the Oregon Air National Guard are a unit that has been deploying gifts to military families since 1942. The Flying Tigers were founded as the American Volunteer Air Force (AVA) in 1941 and flew combat missions over Japan during World War II. In 1944, the AVA merged with the United States Army Air Forces to become the United StatesAAF. The Flying Tigers continued to fly Gift Missions throughout World War II until 1945.
Ashland, Oregon is a small city in the far northwest corner of Oregon. The population was 32,693 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Ashland County. It is home to the University of Oregon and many industries such as aluminum production and forestry. The area now known as Ashland was first settled by people around 1845. A post office called Ashland was established in 1849, and the town site was laid out in 1852 by businessman Luther Mayhew. The name "Ashland" probably comes from a Shawnee word meaning "place where cedar trees grow." The first school in Ashland was built on State Street in 1875. In 1881, there were only 10 residents in town; however, within 5 years all but one of those had left for more developed areas of the county. By 1893, there were over 100 people living in town and 9 businesses. The community took off after Portland architect George Curtis designed a new courthouse and jail which were funded with land sales from local farmers. cotton farming became the dominant industry around World War II because of cheap labor available from Japan; however, this changed when America entered World War II and combat duties led to increased imports of American-made goods that created shortages abroad. This led to mass layoffs among workers at local mills during wartime; also, prices for goods exported to Europe rose sharply as war economies deteriorated overall. In 1948 Union Carbide purchased most of downtown's buildings including the old high school which served as their corporate headquarters until they moved into nearby Burnside Tower two years later (now part of Pioneer Courthouse Square). One result of postwar economic decline has been an influx of refugees - primarily Chinese - who have become a significant minority population in town since then. In 1964 hearings began on plans for Interstate 5 through town; these continued through 1969 when they resulted in failure due to lack support from both sides involved - business owners wanted Interstate 5 bypassing their residential neighborhoods while Mayor Gaynor opposed it because he felt it would damage property values while creating traffic jams on main streets near his office building (now Pioneer Courthouse Square). However, heavy development around Town Hall – including an unsuccessful attempt by developers to build an interstate highway replacement mall – eventually caused Mayor Gaynor's political career to collapse following public outcry over what some saw as a Developer's plot to take away his access to Main Street gridlock while giving other developers free reigns on other parts of Town Hall complex."

There were times when they had to fight against adversity or face difficult challenges just to keep theircommunity going. But despite these difficulties, the residents kept pushing themselves forward until eventually they reached their ultimate destination: success.
