In 1916, the city council enacted a resolution recognizing the navy's contributions to Oregon through its military forces and vessels stationed in Albany. Admiral James W. Richardson presented the resolution at a ceremony attended by Mayor Knight and other city leaders. The Navy purchased two ships from Harriman Shipbuilding Company for service in World War II- USS Helena (AQ-2) and USS Wyoming (AG-1). The City of Albany also contributed money towards ship repairs after war ended. In 1951, an $800 grant was given to the town by President Harry S Truman in recognition of its role in supporting navy activities during WWII and subsequent conflicts. Albany, Oregon is a small town in the state of Oregon, located about an hour and a half from Portland. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. Albany has a mix of residents who are descended from pioneers who settled the area in the 1880s, as well as recent arrivals. It is one of two communities in Oregon designated as “rustic” by the American Heritage Dictionary of Folklore and History. The first people to settle Albany were Stagecoachmen who made their way across country in covered wagons during the late 1800s. The town was named after Captain James A. Albany, commander of a wagon train that crossed overland from Missouri to California during 1849-50. Albany was founded on May 20th, 1889 by Nelson W. Hanks and his wife Emma Jordon Hanks while they were living on what is now North Broadway Street. They leased land from David Ladd which became known as The Fields grant because it had ample pastures for livestock and cattle when first surveyed in 1887-88 by George Armstrong Condon Jr., surveyor fortyne under Governor John Sibley.. In 1895, part of The Fields grant was patented to Nelson W. Hanks’ brother-in-law Augustus Fenton who built what is now East Main Street on it.. In 1897–98 more settlers arrived when road construction began connecting Salem with points northward including Grants Pass through Junction City; this opened up new markets for goods supplied by railroads northwestward into Canada and Mexico.. Albeit limited resources hindered development until 1903 when agricultural production grew rapidly thanks to irrigation canals dug southward along rivers Tennessee and Columbia.. Commercial activity increased sufficiently during World War I (1914-18) that local merchants pooled resources to build a hotel/motel called The Hotel Albion which became known throughout much of northwestern Oregon as THE Albaniotte; this designation continued until 1955 when it reverted back to its original name following incorporation within the city limits A post office operated at Albany from 1888 until 1935; its remains are still standing on East Main Street today (). On October 1st, 1912 Albany incorporated as a city with a population of 727 individuals On December 12th 1915 Mayor Harry Ewing presided over groundbreaking ceremonies for what would become Oneida Park (). This park would serve as both community center and primary education institution until 1982 when it closed due to lack of funding (). In 1951 developer Harry Iwamoto purchased Oneida Park () which he renamed Pee Dee Playground (); however, Middletown Playgrounds (), also located in downtown Albany, took over most aspects OF Pee Dee Playground beginning in 1978-. As part of plans for redevelopment efforts following World War II many older buildings were demolished or replaced with modern structures such as housing developments () but much valuable cultural artifacts remain including: Griggs Schoolhouse (1929), Masonic Lodge No 2 (1862), Presbyterian Church (1895), Post Office Building (1912), King's Chapel (. . .)

Albany, Oregon is a small incorporated town in southern Oregon County, located on the Willamette River. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Albany was named for John Augustus Albany, an early settler in present-day Salem and later a delegate to the Constitutional Convention that created Oregon. The first permanent American settlement in what is now Oregon County was made by Nathaniel Benton and his followers in 1846 after they completed the first stage of their wagon journey from Missouri overland. They built a log cabin on the site of current downtown Albany and called it Bentonville. The post office was established at this location on December 10, 1847. In 1850, Nathaniel's son Isaac Benton moved his family to Albany and began farming there. He also opened a store there. In 1865, two brothers - William Aiken and Arthur Hockaday - founded La Grande City near modern day Eugene with some of their horses and cattle mutton supplied by James Kappeler of Bendigo (later Portland). La Grande City soon became one of the most important towns in southcentral Oregon because it had supplies available for travelers along both sides of the Snake River between Portland and Eugene and because its shipyards provided launching points for vessels traveling upriver to supply soldiers fighting in the Civil War at Fort Donelson west of Bendigo (now Redmond). In 1870, when La Grande City celebrated its centennial year, officials decided that it should be renamed "Albany" after John Augustus Albany so as not to duplicate efforts by other towns which had been renamed similar things such as "Salem" or "Eugene". This name change took place on October 6, 1870; all other localities within present-day Oregon County were given new names following this event. A fire destroyed much of downtown Albany on January 25, 1898; however little damage was done to property elsewhere inside or outside town limits because most buildings were constructed before fire codes were introduced into existence during this time period. By 1901 almost all remaining structures within city limits had been replaced with new ones erected primarily due to increased population growth rates associated with World War I having brought more people into central Oregon County which generally led to increased needs for housing units across various areas including Albany whereupon many pre-1901 structures were renovated/purchased outright or leased from surrounding farmers who continued using them until they sold them off sometime around 1951 when federal funding ended Municipal Reorganization Plan #2 activity in centralOregon county leading to decentralized government patterns throughout peripheral counties followed although some structure remnants remain until today including replacement/replacement/renovation Albanys Post Office building east side facing Main Street) . The town continued to grow until it reached its peak in the early 1920s, when it had about 1,500 residents. However, Albany's growth slowed after World War II and it only had around 100 residents by the end of the decade. By the late 1990s, Albany had little remaining commercial or industrial activity and its population shrunk to just 30 people. It has since experienced a resurgence with growing interest in its history and culture, which has led to increased visitation from tourists and locals alike.
