The Albany, Oregon Coast Guard Station has been providing service to the community since 1907. The station was originally established as the Albany Signal Station. In 1941, the station became the Albany Harbor Patrol Department and in 1951 it became part of the Coast Guard District 9. In 1975, District 9 was renamed the Coast Guard Sector Portland-Salem and in 1991, Sector Portland-Albany were created. In 2003, sectorPortland-Oregon City was added to District 9 and Sector Salem-Beaverton was formed within that district. Today, the Coast Guard Station offers a wide range of services including marine patrol, education and training programs for local law enforcement officers and maritime security. Services are provided at three terminals: Albion Terminal (in downtown Albany), Moraga Terminal (near Moraga Lake) and SEAFARE terminal (near SEAFIELD). The Coast Guard also provides support for many civic events throughout the year including Fourth of July fireworks displays on Mud Island near Hood Canal Bridge and pumpkin patches around town.

After the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, the Coast Guard stepped up its response and implemented new technology to improve safety on our coasts. today, the Coast Guard provides coastal security and disaster relief through its six branches: law enforcement; search and rescue; environmental enforcement; maritime patrol; and public affairs. In 1922, President Calvin Coolidge signed an act that mandated that all US citizens must be licensed by their state authorities in order to engage in any type of commercial fishing or lobsterbing. This act became known as "Lobster Bill" because it was designed to control marine commerce and protect American fisheries from unfair competition from foreign fishermen. After years of lobbying by environmentalists and seafood processors, Congress repealed this ban in 1972. Today there are over 1 million licensed fishermen operating along America's coasts - making Lobster Bill one of America's most popular holiday gifts!
