In 1992, after twenty years of service at Albany Army Airfield, it was sold to Nike Incorporated for $190 million. The airport was closed and its buildings demolished in 1995. However, portions of the original runway remain as part of what is now known as Old Albany Airport Park. Today, much remains from previous eras in Albany including remnants of barracks used by soldiers during World War II; a hangar where military jets once parked; and an old control tower which still stands today. Albany, Oregon is a small town in the Willamette Valley of northern Oregon. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It lies on the banks of the Snake River and has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot summers. Albany is named after Albany, New York. The town began as two families who pooled their resources to build a log cabin in 1875. The first post office was established in 1876, and by 1880, the town had swelled to about 10 residents. In 1886, Albany celebrated its centennial with a celebration that included dances, picnics, speeches by local officials and an oration by Congressman John Sherman Adams (D-Oregon). A railroad was developed through Albany in 1907 and soon it became an important center for commerce in the area. In 1914, when World War I started, Albany joined the United States military as part of America's entry into war; it served until 1919. In 1927, construction began on what would become Macedonia State College; it opened in 1928 and remains one of the most popular educational institutions in town today. The community experienced some growth during World War II when many businesses were moved to new locations due to wartime rationing policies; however, overall Brunswick County saw little change during this time period other than population size fluctuations which were typically around 2%. The postwar years brought economic stability thanks to strong job growth throughout much of Oregon; however there have been recent drops offs in both employment rates and home prices which have impacts on median household incomes around town. Some areas within Albany are seeing positive progress such as increasing diversity among residents while others are struggling with crime rates and limited economic opportunities despite efforts from city leaders over the past few years to improve these conditions Overall though there is evidence that small towns like Albany can sometimes achieve success even when times are difficult due to creativity and determination coupled with a willingness to work together towards common goals

Albany was founded in 1872 by John C. Frémont and his wife, Maria Bartholdi. It became the capital of Oregon in 1887. The city is located in the Willamette Valley on the east side of the Columbia River between Portland and Salem. Albany was named for General George Washington's headquarters at Albany Junction on the Snake River during the American Revolution. The first Europeans to visit Albany were French fur traders in 1792, followed by Spanish missionaries in 1810-11. The City of Albany was platted in 1842 by John Atherton and James McDowell as a town on what is now Northwest Sixth Avenue NW. In 1851, it became part of Multnomah County when it was organized from portions of eastern Oregon Territory. In 1907, following passage of statehood laws by both Oregon and Washington, Albany became an unincorporated community within Multnomah County with its own government under a Board of Commissioners (later renamed the Mayor). In 1916, following World War I, Reconstruction policies led to increased black migration into white areas across America; this included large numbers coming to Eugene and other cities through Portland for work opportunities during wartime industries such as arms production and shipbuilding. As a result of high rates of crime and poverty among black Americans living near white communities throughout America, many blacks decided to move away from their war-torn home countries towards new havens such as Seattle or Vancouver after fighting alongside Allied forces against Germany and Austria-Hungary during World War I. This migration also had effects on racial demographics within Oregon; while there were significant numbers of African Americans living outside Eugene until well into the late 20th century,[1] those numbers began to decrease markedly after 1919[2] due largely to integration efforts conducted by local authorities over decades culminating with passage of federal anti-lynching legislation which made Everett an open all-black town effective November 15th, 1930.[3][4] As part of this effort, Eugene opened its doorstered public schools to non-white students beginning September 6th 1951[5],[6], thereby fulfilling one goal that had been set for Albany more than fifty years earlier: providing equal educational opportunities for all citizens regardless race orethnicity
Apostle George Washington was born in Albany, New York on April 14, 1779. He became an American Revolutionary War soldier and leader, serving as a captain in the Continental Army. In 1794, he moved to Oregon and began preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. He founded the first religious congregation in Oregon, which grew rapidly into a powerful movement. In 1827, Washington was named president of the United States, and he helped lead America through its first period of prosperity and expansion. The following year, he died at age 74 after a long and successful life in politics and religion.
