In 1920, it became a city and remained so until its annexation by Choctaw City in 1937. During World War II, as part of General Motors' efforts to open new production sites across Canada, Yukon became one of four cities located near Battle Creek, Michigan; Assembly Plant No. 5 began operations there on December 6th 1942 under Contract No.: DD-512-AKC (55). During that time period almost all GM vehicles were assembled here including those models which wouldn't be produced anywhere else but North America due to high quality control standards mandated by GM's parent company - Ford Motor Company - or lack thereof during that wartime period itself . In 1907, the Yukon Territory was created from the northern portion of Canadian province of Alberta. The territory was named after the Yukon River, which flows through central Canada. The territory included present-day western Yukon and eastern Alaska. The first residents of the area were those who had journeyed overland from central Canada in search of gold during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1859-1862. In 1916, when World War I began, the territorial government agreed to make available land in western Yukon for military purposes. This land became known as "Area A." In 1944, Area A was divided into two portions: north and south. South Side Land became the capital city of this new subdivision; however, it never really took off because people preferred to live on the east side where there were more forests and resources. In 1959, Area A was reorganized into five districts: Dawson City (the original capital), Fort Peck (later renamed Nome), Whitehorse (now called Nenana), Acton ($7 million budgeted for health services only), and Tuktoyaktuk ($1 million budgeted for all other services). These districts eventually became an autonomous region within the newly created federal government called Yukon Regional District No. 1 in 1988. In 2003, a referendum passed by residents in Area A resulted in approval of a plan to move all public services out of Areas A and B and into a new downtown district called "Central Business District." However, due to budgetary cuts made by successive governments since then Central BCD has not yet been built; instead it is used as headquarters for both local government organizations as well as private businesses that operate within Area A itself
