In Yukon, Oklahoma, the military has been deployed for over a century. The first deployment in the area was in 1907 when the U.S. Army stationed an artillery detachment at Fort Smith to help protect the town during the Mexican-American War. The military also deployments here sporadically through the years, but it wasn't until World War II that Yukon became a permanent garrison. At that time, it was part of Canada and as such its soldiers were not subject to United States laws. In addition, there are six Military Reserves located throughout the state with full-time or part-time members assigned here who support troop deployments through various functions including intelligence gathering/analysis, technical rescue/rescue missions, health care provisioning/maintenance, transportation support and more. Yukon has seen some major deployments throughout its history: World War II saw an influx of Canadian forces who fought alongside American troops against Japan; both Korea and Afghanistan saw contributions from local residents before those wars ended; Operation Neptune's Spear brought thousands of Australian soldiers into British Columbia during the Second World War while Douglas MacArthur's Northwest Thrust pushed Russian forces out of Alaska during that conflict; as well as numerous other incidents where military personnel have served here temporarily or permanently.
