The town was first settled by prospectors who started looking for gold in what is now eastern Oklahoma Territory. The first permanent residents were Dutch immigrants who came to Yukon in 1881. Over time, other groups of settlers also arrived, including Scottish-Irish Catholics from Ireland, American Indians from Kansas and Dakota Territory, Japanese Americans from Japan, and black Americans from Alabama and Mississippi. Eventually, gold was discovered at Yukon Mine in 1903 and development began nearby. By 1907, the mine had produced enough gold to begin selling goods outside of Russia but also generated a significant amount of pollution that caused great concern among local officials. To provide some relief, Russia decided to sell control of Yukon Mine back to Canada for $3 million in 1914. This event helped solidify Canadian control over much of eastern Oklahoma Territory while simultaneously contributing to Native American resistance against European settlement (see "Canadian Conquest: A History of Yukon"). In 1931, after more than fifty years without any major change whatsoever throughout most of Yukon's history (save for brief periods during World War II), white settlers movement began again as new families moved into the area following completion of oil drilling rigs located adjacent to the village center (see "New Settlers arrive: Early days at YukON" below). While many locals welcomed this influxof newcomers as another opportunity for growth; some experienced difficulty adapting culturally due bothto their lack experience living amidst so many different people plus increased social pressure within their own villages which were already struggling economically; nevertheless cultural assimilation proceeded apace within two decades despite various initial setbacks( see "YukON integration: From resistance to progress" below). There have been multiple efforts made since then by government agencies such as Oklahoman Development Authority (ODA)and Cherokee Nation Tribal Organization [CNTO]to promote aboriginal education within municipal boundaries whilevillages continue work towards developing self-sufficient economicmodels; however none have led definitivelyto official Aboriginal status or autonomy within local governments."
