By 1930, their cafe had even achieved national attention when it was featured on TV's "Hometown Heroes." Yukon, Oklahoma is a small town on the edge of the Great Plains. The townsite was land that was claimed by both the United States and Canada in 1867. The first settlement in Yukon was made on what is now the east side of town. In 1870, a post office was established in Yukon and remained in operation until 1907. By 1910, there were only 9 residents living in Yukon. In 1912, an act to create a new county within Haskell County was passed and only 2 residents lived in Yukon at that time. In 1917, it became part of Haskell County. The population of Yukon increased slowly throughout the early 1920s as people moved into the area to work on military bases or goldmining operations. However, World War II caused a significant population growth as people came to help with the war effort. The community changed hands several times during the war before it reached its current form. In 1948, YUKON voted to become an independent city and has since been one of its most successful municipalities ever created

The city grew rapidly and in 1930 it had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1940, Yukon was renamed McAlester after General William McAlester, one of the founders of Oklahoma City.
