Woodward was named for General George Custer, who fought in the Indian Wars and was killed in 1885 while leading an attack against the Sioux Tribe at Little Bighorn. The town experienced some growth during World War II; its population increased from ninety-eight people in 1907 to two thousand by 1945. However, economic decline led to Woodward's closing by 1957. Today, most of what used to be Woodward is now part of Tulsa. One section of town remains intact - the Woodward Business District - which is home to a number of businesses including several banks and several hundred homes.
