In the early days of Woodward, there was only one military deployment in town. The US Cavalry stationed here for a brief period of time in 1903 to help with the Territorial government’s fight against Apache Indians. However, this deployment is not as famous as later deployments such as the Vietnam War or Iraq War, because it didn’t result in any injuries or fatalities. The first military deployment that took place in Woodward occurred on Christmas Day, 1907 when an American Expeditionary Force arrived here to provide support for the local ranchers during their campaign against an unknown enemy. This force consisted of three companies of infantry and two Companies C ( artillery) of cavalry. Unfortunately, no casualties were incurred during this short-lived engagement. Since Woodward had no garrison troops at the time, it relied exclusively on its volunteer militia for defense until 1912 when a battalion of the Oklahoma National Guard was activated to take up arms against Raiders from Mexico who were terrorizing northeastern Oklahoma. In 1916, Woodward voters approved a referendum to annex the city of Muskogee into the municipality; this annexation created a new municipal government which lasted until 1959 when the two towns amalgamated again under the name of Woodward County (renaming also for J.C.'s father). The town has experienced several expansions over its history, most notably during World War II when it became an important munitions manufacturing center due to its location on the then-secret Muskogee River munitions production site. During that time, Woodward also became one of the most vibrant communities in eastern Oklahoma; many businesses were built and continue to operate today including banks, hotels, churches and other civic organizations. The first mention of Woodward appears in written records dating back to 1881; at that time it was known as “Newtown” after General James Fenton’s brigade headquarters which was located there at that time (Fenton later served as governor of Oklahoma). The first settlers were three brothers - J C , W D & G W Woodruffe - who started mining coal from what is now known as North Street near present day Eastern Avenue/Highway #39A . Coalmining continued for many years but ceased around 1910 due to increased competition from oil shale production elsewhere in the state . In 1916 , Woodward voters voted to annex City of Muskogee into Municipality so this led to creation of new Municipal government with J C as Mayor During WWII , because of its strategic location on Muskogee River munitions production site(now part Of Tulsa),Woodward became one OF THE most vibrant Communities In Eastern Oklahoma Many Business were Built like Banks etc
