Weatherford is a town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa–Mulberry Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Weatherford can be traced back to 1881 when James A. Weatherford and his family set out from their farm northeast of Tulsa to make their fortunes in the oil industry. In 1907, they founded the Weatherford Oil Company which remains an important player in the local economy to this day. The town was built on land that had been used by the Kiowa and Comanche tribes for buffalo hunting and fishing before white settlers arrived in what is now Haskell County. Early residents were farmers who raised cattle and hogs, mined coal and gravels, grew cotton, potatoes, corn, wheat and soybeans, erected homes made of logs or other materials found nearby (a practice known as "building by hand"), hunted deer and rabbits with shotguns obtained from neighboring ranchers or fished from creeks and rivers nearby. Weatherford is a town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,581 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1907 by Myron Weatherford and named after his father, Winfield Scott Weatherford. The first post office in Weatherford was established in 1907. The name of the town was changed to Weatherford in 1912 when it became part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. In 1914, the city of Tulsa were incorporated and their residents forced to leave Weatherford because of its high price for property. The first store built in Weatherford was opened by Wm H. Pritchard on Main Street in 1909. By 1915, there were 10 stores with a population of 100 people each in what is now downtown Weatherford. By 1920, there were 21 stores with a population of 350 people each and 2 banks with a total clientele of $4 million dollars each! In 1925, Myron J. Weatherford donated land to build the present day NASDAQ building which housed the Tulsa branch bank from 1924 to 1976. On November 5th 1916 local farmers gathered around an old wood fire located east side of town to celebrate Oklahoma’s centennial year when they voted unanimously to change the name from “Oklahoma Place” to “Weatherford”
