The history of Tulsa can be traced back to 1836 when it was founded as a small town by Choctaw people. In 1907, Tulsa became an independent city and in 1907 also designated as Indian Territory. On December 15, 1907, Congress passed the General Appropriations Act which created Oklahoma Territory and made Tulsa part of that territory. It wasn't until 1915 that Oklahoma became a state and on January 16th, 1916, making Tulsa its capital. The city has experienced many changes throughout its history including becoming a major center for oil production during World War I; becoming increasingly Latino during the 1990s through waves of immigration from Latin America; experiencing economic growth following the creation ofOklahoma City; becoming more divided along racial lines following the 2010 Census with African Americans making up 41% of the population but Hispanics comprising 54% and whites comprising 56% percent; and most recently experiencing increased violence after several high-profile police shootings over recent years
