As Tulsa, Oklahoma marks its centennial year, it is also the 116th anniversary of a coffee trade that has taken place in this city for over a century. The origins of artisan coffee can be traced back to 1887 when two Dutchmen, Cornelius P. de Jong and Hendrik Janssen, founded the first successful coffee roasting business in Tulsa. It was during this time that they were joined by two other Dutchmen, Adrian van der Zandt and Frederik Bols. Together, these men constituted the Amsterdam Coffee Company. The Amsterdam Coffee Company soon became world-renowned for their high-quality coffee beans. Their products were sold throughout Europe and North America; however, it was during World War II that the company’s fame truly grew. The company exported beans to Japan and Korea; as well as selling cups of coffee through American military bases around the world. In 1948, Cornelius P. De Jong passed away; however, his legacy lives on in the Amsterdam Coffee Company through his son Jan De Jong and grandson Cornelius Hennepin III. Today, Jan Dejong continues to lead the company while Cornelius Hennepin III serves as its president and CEO. The Amsterdam Coffee Company remains one of Tulsa’s most significant businesses – both locally and nationally – and its products continue to be enjoyed by people all over the world today!

In the late 1800s, Tulsa was a small town in Oklahoma. The city was founded by people who were looking for a new home. They started out by trading goods and services with other towns in the area.
