The area now called Tulsa was first inhabited by the Osage Nation. In 1923, Tulsans voted to annex OKC (Oklahoma City) which led to their becoming one city under one government with an equal say in all matters pertaining to education, economic development and political decisions. Today we continue this proud tradition by electing our own mayors and commissioners who are responsible for everything from traffic management to building new parks! The first settlers in what would become Tulsa arrived during 1892 when railroads began traveling through that region on their way from Kansas City and St. Louis across Canada to Oklahoma City and Wichita Territory. Railroads were not only beneficial because they allowed for easy transportation of goods but also created opportunities for entrepreneurs like J.B.'s brother-in-law George Eustis who built the first post office in downtown Tulsa in 1892 (Eustis Place). With so many people moving into town during this time there was little room for businesses other than small shops along First Street near Garry Boulevard where farmers could buy produce fresh from their fields early morning until late at night before heading home for dinner or supper some miles away down Garry Boulevard where grocery stores continued open until about 10 p.m., making it impossible for claimants of Fourth Avenue between Broadway and Western Avenue sidewalks to get food during those hours! This lack of business space led Eustis to build his second post office just east of Eastern Ave outside what is now Mabel’s Clothing Store today - still known as “Eustis Place” - giving him more space within which he could operate his store plus acreage bordering Center Street on both sides providing ample parking lot suitable for his two buseshelves full of products! This type of entrepreneurialism would be common throughout much of American History as businessmen took advantage of new technology including railways which made getting products and services to customers possible even if they were located far away or outof reach! Over time other companies followed suit such as Davenport Silk Mills (now part of Kimberly-Clark), Wigwam Cigar Manufacturing Company (now part Viceroy Cigars), Sears Roebuck & Co., Coca Cola Bottling plant #1 opened in 1924 – making Tulsa world's first major soft drink manufacturer – Alfred P Sloan became its president – retailing products direct from suppliers rather than through wholesalers – opening up many new jobs areas such as employed auto mechanics doing work on cars while their wives cooked dinner; shoe stores; restaurants; bars; movie theaters etc…..all while continuing existing businesses side by side filling needs without taking away from each other’s operations! This entrepreneurialism continues today with many small businesses operating independently yet interconnected through online channels like ebay et al….truly American History at its best!!
