In 1940, Tulsans voted to become an autonomous city within their state with their own mayoral election process instead of being annexed into Oklahoma City again like other cities within that state during that period such as Lawton and Norman. The vote passed with 68% against annexation while 24% approved it because they felt it would be better for their economy and more democratic than having another large corporatecity within their borders. The change led to increased nightlife activity due to greater access to restaurants and nightclubs without Engagement Requirements imposed by larger metropolitan areas such as Dallas-Fort Worth or Wichita Falls-Ft Worth metroplexes adjacent thereto!
