The United States Air Force has a long and colorful history in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The city was the site of an airbase where America's first jet fighters were built in the 1940s. It also served as an important refueling stop for bomber aircraft during World War II. Today, Tulsa is home to the Tulsa County Air National Guard Base and the Tulsa-based K-9 unit of the Army's 5th Infantry Division Combat Support Command. Prior to World War II, Tulsa had no air force presence at all. In 1941, however, local citizens organized what would become the Tulsa Aeronautical Society (TAS). TAS leased land at Northwest corner of First Avenue and State Street to establish an experimental airstrip on what is now known as 1st Street Northeast. In early 1942, Lt. Col. John Smedley founded 3rd Bombardment Wing (3BW) at 3BW Airport with nucleus from 2nd Bombardment Wing (2BW) at Grand Rapids Municipal Airport in Michigan Territory. With this new wing came a need for a flying laboratory to test new fighter planes being developed by American manufacturers such as Lockheed Aircraft Company and Boeing Aircraft Company. It wasn't until 1945 that Wichita resident Maj.-Gen James Melson became director of operations for 4th Fighter Group(4FG), which was activated under commands of Ninth Air Force ( Ninth AF ), commandeered from Third Air Force (3AF) on 15 May 1944 at RAF Lakenheath England after Strategic Bombing Directive No XXXVI put restrictions onAAF's ability to provide combat support for European Theater forces operating against German targets within Continental Europe . Afteractivation 4FG departed RAF Lakenheath 14 July 1945 en route back to Wright-Patterson AFB Ohio USA arriving 8 August 1945 . On 16 August 1945 4FG assumed control of 9th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron (TRS) which had been activated 18 June 1944 at Kelly Field Texas USA under Tenth Air Force HQ subsequently redesignated 497th Troop Carrier Group flying Douglas C-47 Skytrain medium transports/commando flights providing cover for army ground forces moving into Germany

The Tulsa Air Force Base gift history began in 1946 when the United States Air Forces stationed a detachment of B-29s at Tulsa. The first gifts were uniforms and equipment, followed by baseball caps and other necessities for the pilots. In 1951, the base erected its first air hangar, which allowed for more Gifts to be given. By 1954, it had become evident that the gift culture was growing on Tulsa AFB. A committee was formed to develop a traditions program for the AFB. The result was the inaugural Gift Awards Dinner, which honoredinguished military and civilian individuals with gifts totaling $1,500. On November 11 of that year, voters approved incorporation with a population of 2700 residents. The growth of industry and transportation within Tulsans prompted Mayor George Wickersham to call for annexation into OKC on May 1, 1912; however this proposition failed to receive enough signatures to be ratified at referendum. Oklahoma State University (OSU) opened its doors on October 16, 1923 as one of only two universities in Oklahoma open to students regardless of race or gender. OSU became known as "The University of Oklahoma" after accepting its charter from then-Governor David Boren on November 24th of that year. OSU's significant contributions include developing modern technologies such as digital media and information technology; creating OU Health System which includes over 100 clinics across eight states; sponsoring world-renowned events like the Nobel Prize ceremonies; providing graduate education opportunities for more than 12000 Oklahomans annually through Phyllis Schlafly School Of Public Affairs & Leadership Studies at OU; and nurturing hometown industry including manufacturing plants throughout downtown Tulsa during Economic Expansion Week each year since it began in 1984

In 1854, James Buchanan Polk was elected President of the United States and moved his family to Tulsa to be close to politics. On December 15th, 1855 just four days after he took office Polk signed into law the Kansas-Nebraska Act which gave Oklahoma Territory to Nebraska while still keeping Tulsa part of Texas. In 1907 Northwest Electric Railway built a line from Tulsa to Jenks providing electricity for all sized towns in eastern Oklahoma Territory including Guthrie and McAlester along with new homes for company executives and employees across town at First National Bank site now known as Union Station Square. This great accomplishment helped put Tulsans back into business after World War II when oil prices were high and manufactures closed down aroundthe nation due to scarce resources
The town of Tulsa was first settled in 1836. The city was founded by the United States government as a military post on the Arkansas River. The city became a center for oil production and commerce after oil was discovered in 1901. In 1907, Tulsa annexed the City of Oklahoma City. The two cities were combined into one municipality in 1907 and remain separate municipalities to this day.
