Tahlequah, Oklahoma is a small town in the state of Oklahoma. The population was 3,821 as of the 2010 census. It is located in Stephens County. Tahlequah is home to the Tahlequah Indian Industrial Park and the Tahlequah Area School District. The primary industry in Tahlequah is agriculture, with crops such as corn, wheat, soybeans and cotton being grown. The area that now makes up Tahlequah was first inhabited by the Wichita people in 1828. The town was founded by David Davenport on November 8, 1892. Davenport named it after his brother-in-law, General James Hancey who had been killed during fighting against Mexico at Palo Alto Creek in 1846. In 1907, Texas businessman Jens Hansen purchased some land east of present day Tahlequah and built a sawmill there called the Hansen Saw Mill which continued operating until 1922 when it burned down. In 1925, a group of businessmen led by Wm Hargrave bought the Hansen mill site and started to build a new sawmill which they named the Mohawk Saw Mill after their tribal leader Chief Mohawk (alias John Graves Simcoe). The mill continued operation until it caught fire on July 9th 1951; all five employees were killed in the fire except for one employee who ran into safety before firefighters could reach him. The community became known as "the Miketown" because many local farmers grew grapes for wine production purposes nearby Mount Vernon Dam (). However due to Prohibition laws prohibiting alcoholic beverage sales within city limits during that time period, most businesses closed down or changed ownership over time without any lasting impact on the community's economy or culture. This changed with repeal of prohibition laws in 1933 when most downtown businesses reopened following tax breaks given to them by Governor Earl Warren.. As wine production declined thereafter there was no real economic impact on the community but development fees levied upon properties adjacent to Mount Vernon Dam resulted in significant loss for both developers and residents over time which has still not been fully recovered even 25 years later.. In 1990s efforts were made again to revive grape production through vineyard development however this attempt failed when higher yielding varieties like vinifera began to take hold instead
