The history of the navy deployed gift program in Tahlequah, Oklahoma dates back to the early 1960s. The first naval vessel to visit the city was USS Constitution (CV-11) on July 14, 1961. The ship’s sailors donated more than $5,000 in donated items, including a largesignal buoy and military surplus clothing. In 1965, USS Enterprise (CV-6) made an extended stay in Tahlequah after completing a tour of duty in Vietnam. The crew distributed more than 1,500 items from the ship’s cargo hold to local businesses and individuals. In 1970, USS Ramage (DDG-71) visited Tahlequah for her final time before being decommissioned at Naval Station Yokosuka. While docked in town, the crew donated nearly 2 acres of land to be used as a park. Since then, Navy personnel have regularly contributed items to local charities and events during community outreach visits. In 2013, members of the navy deployed Gift Program Team 7th Fleet collected more than 650 pounds of gifts for troops stationed overseas across Europe duringOperation Christmas Tree campaign. This year’s event will mark the 10th anniversary of Operation Christmas Tree and will include an appearance by Petty Officer First Class Nolan Wehner from Pacific Fleet who is scheduled to receive a proclamation from Mayor Sylvester Turner recognizing his contribution to charitable giving by naval personnel stationed abroad

This year, the Department of Defense is deploying more than 1,700 sailors and marines to serve in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the air campaign against ISIS. These sailors and marines will be living and working away from home for extended periods of time, but they have brought along some amazing gifts with them. The USS George Washington (CVN-77) was deployed to the Arabian Sea in support of Operation Neptune's Spear in January 2005. The ship arrived in Tahlequah, Oklahoma on 10th March 2005 and began its deployment on 15th March 2005. It is thought that the USS George Washington may have been donated by navy personnel stationed in Tahlequah for this military mission.
Tahlequah is a city in the Tulsa metropolitan area, located on the east bank of the Arkansas River. The population was 103,813 as of 2010. It is situated on the eastern edge of Tulsa County and borders Osage County to the south and west, Canadian County to the north and east, and Shawnee County to the north-east. The river forms its western border. The first European settlement in what is now Tahlequah was by French fur traders in 1767. In 1836, when Indian Territory was organized into Oklahoma Territory, Tahlequah became part of that new territory. In 1907, Oklahoma merged with Texas to form the Lone Star State; Tahlequah therefore ceased being an independent municipality within Texas but continued to be a separate municipality within Oklahoma until it joined that state's municipal government as part of its newly formed Tulsa metropolitan area in 2010. Today, Tahlequah is a thriving city with a rich history dating back to 1836. Its downtown features distinctive brick buildings from early days when trading posts were established hereabouts along with more recent commercial developments such as corporate headquarters for major companies and apartment complexes for people who work or live near downtown. There are also several museums located throughout town including one dedicated exclusively to Native American art which opened in 2009 adjacent to City Hall Parkette on Main Street/Atkinson Avenue!
