The Oklahoma National Guard was activated on September 17, 1907 as the Territorial Militia of Oklahoma. The National Guard was re-activated on October 15, 1907 and organized under the command of Brigadier General James H. Nichols. On November 3, 1907 the militia was redesignated the Oklahoma National Guard and assigned to the Department of War. The first brigadier general in command of the national guard was Maj. Gen. John Mclntyre who served from 1911-1914. In 1916 Major General George Armstrong Custer called for a new brigade headquarters in Tahlequah which became known as Headquarters and Service Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment (OKNG). This battalion later became known as Headquarters and Service Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment (OKNG). In 1920 Colonel Charles Wickersham assumed command of Headquarters and Service Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment (OKNG) which became known as 1st Brigade Combat Team (OKCBT). In 1933 Colonel Charles Wickersham retired from service with 1st Brigade Combat Team (OKCBT) and Lieutenant Colonel Luther Pritchard took his place commanding this unit until he left military service in 1939 to become a rancher. During World War II Lieutenant Colonel Pritchard commanded an infantry battalion at Camp Bowie where he learned how to camouflage vehicles so they would blend into their surroundings when moving through enemy territory. When hostilities ended he rejoined 1st Brigade Combat Team (OKCBT) but relinquished command after only eighteen months due to ill health then returned home to manage his ranching operations until his death in 1946 at the age of seventy five years old. After Lieutenant Colonel Pritchard's death1st Brigade Combat Team reverted back to its original name OKNG upon its activation on October 15th 1957 by President Dwight D Eisenhower with headquarters located at Fort Riley Kansas before being relocated to Tahlequah in 1959 when it became one regiment under I Troop/5th Cavalry Division effective November 3rd 1957.
