Tahlequah was a town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. It was established in 1907 by white settlers and named for General George Custer. The population of Tahlequah at the time of its incorporation was 1,402. It dissolved due to lack of population growth in the 1920s and disappeared from the map after that. In 1907, white settlers founded Tahlequah on the east bank of the Arkansas River near present-day Reno. The town was designated as a post office on Decatur Creek on May 10, 1907. The first postmaster general was J.M. Beardsley. In 1914, when Indian Territory became part of Oklahoma, Tahlequah re-appeared on the maps but had no residents until 1921 when it re-established itself as an unincorporated community with a population of 12 people under Mr. Carlisle Humbert (1902-1981). By 1922 there were only six people living in Tahlequah which decreased to five by 1926 because most residents left for other towns in Muskogee County after county government reorganization changed ownership of land within Muskogee County from railroad companies to counties (Oklahoma State Highway Commission 1959). The last resident died in 1981 and has not been replaced since then so there is no current record or census data available about what happened to the town between 1907 and 1981; however it is likely that little changed other than its name and disappearance from public records
On November 21, 1907, the town of Tahlequah was founded by group of men led by Jesse James. It quickly became a thriving community with a population of around 100 people. The town prospered thanks to its natural resources and its relationship with the railroad. By 1922, Tahlequah had grown to over 500 people and it became an important stop on the railroad route between Tulsa and Oklahoma City.
