Tahlequah is a city in northeastern Oklahoma and the seat of Haskell County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 21,041. The growth of Tahlequah has been spurred by its natural resources: oil shale and gas discovered near Tahlequah in 1937 and 1938 respectively; coal mining throughout most of Haskell County since 1951; agriculture since at least 1912; and manufacturing beginning in 1915 with a local cotton gin that produced cloth for local markets until 1990 when it closed down due to competition from imports. Today’s economy owes much to services such as tourism, retail trade, transportation, banking, health care services and information technology companies headquartered in Tulsa or elsewhere adjacent to Tahlequah Airport which serve both locals and tourists alike.
