Stillwater is also home to Mid-America Nazarene University and Oral Roberts University. The name "stillwater" comes from the Potawatomi word "siilwatuta," meaning "river of still water." The first settlers in what is now Stillwater were Native Americans who established villages along the Arkansas River. In 1819, James Ketchum discovered oil residing near what would become Stillwater while prospecting for oil leases in present-day Kansas. After visiting Ketchum's site, Stephens became interested in finding natural resources around this new town and began leasing land to other men for development purposes as well as farming it himself; he named his company Stephens Oil Company after himself and his predecessor on the leaseholds (Ketchum had died before Stephens took over). By 1827, when American entrepreneur George Rogers Clark built Fort Gibson on the confluence ofthe Arkansas River and Osage Creek to protect his interests during Indian hostilities against Mexico, Stephens' holdings extended into present-day Tulsa County (though some acreage remained with Ketchum's fatherlandman John Davenport).
